After recording

What happens once a recording ends — the final transcript, speaker names, the summary, action items — and when that work runs: right away, on the charger or when the Mac is not in use.

The After recording page shows what happens once a recording ends, step by step, and decides when that work runs, so it does not drain the battery or slow the Mac while you are using it.

The steps

The recording itself is saved as it is made. These steps run on it afterwards, in this order, with the same names the meeting page uses while it finishes:

  • Final transcript: on by default. After a meeting transcribed live, the recording is read again in long stretches, which hears more than the short live windows, and the live lines are improved. If it is stopped, the live transcript stays. It is greyed out, with the reason, when it does not apply: with After the meeting on Recording the whole recording is transcribed then anyway, and live translation keeps its transcript.
  • Speakers: puts names on the lines, as set on Speakers.
  • Summary: on by default, written automatically after the transcript. Turn it off to summarise only when you ask, with Summarize now on the meeting. Where and by which model is set on Summaries.
  • Action items: found with the summary.
  • Descriptions: on by default. For every suggested action, what needs doing and why, written after the summary.

Each step exists once: these switches are only here.

Finish meetings

When plugged in or not in use (the default), Right away, When not in use or Only when plugged in.

The steps above keep the Mac busy for minutes, so they can wait for the charger or until you are not using the Mac.

  • When plugged in or not in use: runs at once on the charger; on battery it waits until you step away from the Mac.
  • Right away: runs as soon as the meeting ends, wherever you are.
  • When not in use: waits until you step away, even on the charger, so the Mac stays quick while you work.
  • Only when plugged in: never on battery; the work waits for the charger.

When to change it: Right away if you need the notes the moment the call ends; Only when plugged in if you travel and want every bit of battery.

A waiting meeting says so. Its row and its page show why — "Waiting to finish · on battery", "· while the Mac is in use", "· Low Power Mode" or "· the Mac is hot" — with Finish now to start it anyway. A meeting waiting in the queue is still there after a restart.

Watching it finish

While a meeting finishes, its page shows each step as it runs — transcribing, naming speakers, the summary, the action items — with its progress, and opens the finished meeting by itself. Your notes stay where they are. A step that fails says why and offers Retry.

Notify when a transcript or summary is ready

In the same section as Finish meetings, on by default. A notification when the transcript and the summary are ready; click it to open the meeting. Turn it off if you would rather look yourself.

With the encrypted vault

If the encrypted vault would lock itself while a meeting is still being processed, it waits until the work is done, at most 30 minutes. Locking it yourself is still immediate. Work that needs a locked vault waits for the next unlock ("Waiting for the vault to be unlocked") instead of being skipped. The switch is Finish processing a meeting before the vault locks, in Settings → Privacy, on by default.

For the curious

  • "Not in use" means no keyboard or mouse input anywhere on the Mac for 5 minutes, not just away from PrivateGoat.
  • On battery, each heavy step is followed by a 2-minute pause before the next.
  • A hot Mac waits whatever the setting. Low Power Mode waits too, unless the setting is Right away.
  • Finish now overrides the timing, the battery and the heat, but never a running recording. For a meeting whose files are in a locked vault, it asks for Touch ID first.
  • The queue is a small file beside the meetings, after-meeting-queue.json. It holds no words: the transcript is read back from the meeting's own folder when its turn comes.

What leaves your Mac

Nothing from this page. The summary goes where Summaries says.
