People and speaker names

Names from the call window, read on your Mac, with the People page, corrections that stick and optional remembered voices.

Transcript lines can carry the name of who spoke. In Teams, Zoom and Google Meet the name comes from the way the call window marks the speaker, read on this Mac while the meeting records. A small voice model, also running on the Mac, groups the other voices and fills only the lines nobody named. Every name can be corrected by right-click, and the People page collects everyone the call window named.

How to use it

  1. Before the recording starts, switch on Save screenshots of the call window (Settings → Meetings → Experimental). Names from the window need these pictures; see Call screenshots.
  2. Switch on Name speakers from the call window in Settings → Meetings. In Teams, Zoom and Google Meet, the tile marked as the active speaker is read on the Mac, and the name on it goes onto the line that person spoke. Other call apps give pictures without names. Zoom and Meet support is new.
  3. Switch on Name speakers by voice in Settings → Meetings. The other voices are grouped by a small voice model on the Mac, which fills only the lines nobody named.
  4. Fix a name by right-clicking a line, a turn or a chip: Rename…, Name This Speaker… or This Line Is…. Use this name in every meeting makes the correction app-wide.

The People page. Sidebar → People lists everyone the call window named, across every meeting, with the picture cropped from their call tile or their initials, and a line such as "12 meetings · last Thu 23 Oct". Open a person to see their meetings (each one opens the meeting) and the lines they spoke.

Rename and merge. On a person, Rename… uses the new name in every meeting, and their picture and remembered voice follow it. Merge Into… turns two entries into one person.

Remembered voices. Remember voices across meetings is off by default. It keeps the voice of each person the call window named, and only inside the encrypted vault: it cannot be switched on until the vault keeps voice profiles (see The encrypted vault). Name people by their remembered voice then names the voices the window could not, such as people in the room or on the phone. Such a line is marked as named by voice, and the call window's names always win.

Forgetting. Forget Voice… and Forget Picture… on a person delete that one file; their meetings and names stay. Settings → Meetings also has Delete Speaker Pictures… and Delete Voice Profiles… for all of them at once.

What leaves your Mac

Nothing, except one download: the voice model for Name speakers by voice, about 22 MB, is fetched once from Hugging Face when you install it, the same host as the speech models (see What leaves your Mac). Names, pictures and voices stay on this Mac.

When it is off or fails

  • Call screenshots are off: no names from the call window; the transcript keeps the lines, without names.
  • An app other than Teams, Zoom or Google Meet, or Zoom's speaker view: no names from the window, pictures only; voices can still be grouped, but not named from the window.
  • The vault is off: remembered voices cannot be switched on.
  • A name is wrong: right-click the line and choose Rename…, or open the person in People and use Rename….
