The welcome tour
Up to ten short steps from download to first meeting: two are required, the rest can be skipped and reopened later.
The tour is the app's first-run setup. It asks for the two things recording cannot work without — the microphone and a speech model — and offers the rest with a Skip button, so you can be recording a meeting a few minutes after installing.
The steps
| Step | What it asks for | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome to PrivateGoat | Nothing; Start begins the tour. | — |
| Let PrivateGoat listen | Microphone (required); system audio and paste access are optional. | Microphone |
| Choose a Whisper model | One speech model for transcription; it downloads now. | Yes |
| Summaries are optional | A local summary model, offered with setup. | No |
| Lock your meetings away | The encrypted vault. Off by default. | No |
| Check for updates? | Whether the app may check privategoat.app on its own. On by default. Only in a copy that can update itself. | No |
| Where PrivateGoat lives | Menu bar, Dock, launch at login. | No |
| Does your team plan in Jira? | Connect Jira…, or Not Now (the default). Only while no Jira is connected. | No |
| Connect your coding agent | Claude Code, Codex or Claude Desktop setup; it also mentions Chats. | No |
| You're all set | Nothing; Finish closes the tour. | — |
Jira is optional. Skipping its step changes nothing: PrivateGoat is a meeting recorder until you connect Jira, later, in Settings → Jira. See Connect Jira.
Continue stays disabled until the microphone is allowed and one speech model is installed, and the step names whichever of the two is still missing.
Permissions the tour asks for
- Microphone — records your side of every meeting. Required.
- Screen & System Audio Recording — records what the Mac plays, which is the other side of the call. No screen video is saved; the only pictures are the optional call screenshots, off by default. See Recording.
- Paste (Accessibility) — lets dictation type into the app you were in. Without it, dictation copies the text instead. See Dictation.
Reopening the tour
Choose PrivateGoat → Welcome Tour…, or Settings → General → About → Welcome Tour…. Reopening it does not repeat or undo any choice you already made; the current settings are shown as they are.
What the tour stores and sends
The choices become app preferences: automatic update checks, menu bar and Dock, launch at login, the
chosen speech model. Connecting Jira on its step is the same sign-in as in Settings → Jira. Downloaded speech models land in
~/Library/Application Support/Sonavia/Models. Skipping a step makes no network request; a step you
accept makes exactly the request it describes — a model download, an update check, the local-summary
setup, or the Atlassian sign-in.
Nothing about the meeting data is involved yet.
If a step fails
A model download that fails can be retried on the same step, and the tour stays where it is; the rest of the app is already usable once the microphone and one model are in place. A permission you refuse can be granted later in System Settings → Privacy & Security, and the tour will show it as granted when reopened.
